Anwar Ma’aruf

Anwar Ma’ruf is a civil society practitioner and social movement activist with extensive experience in community organizing, workers’ rights advocacy, grassroots mobilization, and public policy engagement. His professional and activist journey has been closely associated with efforts to strengthen the voice, representation, and bargaining position of workers and marginalized communities within Indonesia’s broader social and economic development processes. He has held a leadership role within the Konfederasi Pergerakan Rakyat (KPR), reflecting his longstanding engagement in building popular movements and advancing a more democratic, equitable, and people-centred development agenda.

Throughout his work, Anwar has developed substantial expertise in labour rights, social justice, workers’ empowerment, community organizing, economic democracy, social protection, and policy advocacy. His engagement has included facilitating spaces for popular education, organizing workers and communities, strengthening grassroots participation, and advocating for policies that promote greater social and economic justice. His perspectives and experience have also been reflected in publications documenting Indonesia’s labour movement, including his contribution as the author of the epilogue to Buruh Menuliskan Perlawanannya, a publication capturing the experiences and reflections of labour activists and workers’ movements in Indonesia.

As a member of Perkumpulan Inisiatif, Anwar Sastro Ma’aruf brings a valuable grassroots and movement-based perspective to the organization’s work on inclusive development, social accountability, and democratic governance. His combination of experience in community organizing, labour movement development, civic participation, and policy advocacy provides a strong foundation for engaging with issues of inclusive governance, decent work, social protection, inequality reduction, workers’ empowerment, citizen participation, and civil society strengthening. His professional orientation is grounded in the belief that sustainable social change requires meaningful participation of citizens and organized communities in shaping the policies and institutions that affect their lives.
